Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium

Completing Hospitality District

Indianapolis, Indiana

In 2006, the Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority retained RATIO Architects to design a major expansion to the Indiana Convention Center in response to increased demand for conventions and trade shows. This Phase V expansion included contiguous exhibition halls with 254,000 square feet and 63,000 square feet of flexible meeting space with significant pre-function and support space – all within a tight urban site. The addition increases the total leasable space at the facility to over 728,000 square feet, among the largest convention centers in the Midwest.

The expansion opportunity came from the site created through demolition of the outdated RCA Dome, which was itself replaced by the new Lucas Oil Stadium. The project also includes the design of a climate-controlled pedestrian passageway between the Convention Center and the Stadium.

Conventional Wisdom prepared several program alternatives with RATIO as part of the master planning phase, evaluating these options within site limitations and budget constraints, until the final space program and configuration evolved.
